Overview

Accelerated Math, or AM, is used in math class to support the math curriculum. I can assign specific objectives for the students to work on. AM will tell me how well the students are doing at any given time. If a student is having trouble with an objective, AM will put up a red flag so that I can create an exercise for the student to work on. Student can earn HW passes for AM work.

Folder

Each student has his or her own AM Folder. The folder will contain just: *1 Practice, *1 Test (when needed), *1 Practice Card, *1 Test Card, and *TOPS Reports. The left side of the folder will contain the TOPS reports while the right side will contain the practice, test (when needed), and two scan cards. It is important that that this is all that is in the folder at any time and the folder stays organized and neat!!!

How AM Works

Each student has his or her own folder with a practice. No two practices are the same in the class. The student works all of the problems on the practice (until End of Assignment) and puts the answers on a separate practice score card. When practice is complete, the student then scans the card (my room, Mrs. Martel's room, or the library), recycles the old practice, gets a TOPS report and a new practice that automatically prints, staples it on the top left corner of the page, and works on the new practice using the same card (the new practice will start with the next number). Only when a new practice starts with the the number 1, does the student use the other side of the card. Only when both sides of the card are filled, can a student recycle the old card and get a new card. Scan cards are expensive, so each student needs to make sure she uses both sides of the card before she gets a new card. If a student scores less than an 80%, he or she will need to make corrections on a separate sheet of paper before recycling and working on another assignment.

How to Master an Objective

AM gives 6 questions for each objective on a practice and 5 questions on a test. If a student answers 5 of 6 questions correct on the AM practice, he is ready to test on it. If a student answers 4 of 5 questions correct on the AM test, then the objective is mastered.

Tests

Only I can print a test or an exercise. Students will have a separate test card to use like the practice card. A few times a week I will print out tests for the class. Only students who have answered 5 of 6 questions correctly for at least 1 objective will get a test printed. Students can look at their latest TOPS report to see how many objectives are ready to test. I usually print tests in the afternoon, so a student may find a new test in her folder the next time she opens it. DO THE TEST. DO NOT THROW AWAY.  When students do AM, they should do the test first if they have one. I repeat...DO THE TEST FIRST. Tests are the final phase in mastering an objective. When a student finishes a test, he will scan it, recycle it, and get his TOPS report. A new test will NOT be printed; only I can print tests.

Exercises

Only I can print an exercise. A separate exercise card should be kept in the student's homework folder because I use exercises for homework sometimes. I also print exercises for quizzes or extra practice for troublesome objectives. Exercise problems count the same as practice problems: students answer 5 of 6 questions correctly on an objective to eligible to test on it. When a student finishes a exercise, she will scan it, recycle it, and get her TOPS report. A new exercise will NOT be printed; only I can print exercise.

Homework Passes

I offer homework passes to students who master objectives. Every week or two I will give out homework passes to students who master objectives. They will be rewarded a homework pass for:

5 objectives

15 objectives

30 objectives

45 objectives

60 objectives

75, 90, 105, 120, 140, 160, 180, 200, 220, 240 objectives

Homework passes can also be used for adding bonus points to quizzes and tests!

Practice, Test, and Exercise Cards

Students will use a separate form card for practices, tests, and exercises. Each will have a unique number that the student will write and bubble in. Students will use the same side of the card for the next assignment that is printed. Only when a practice, test, or exercise starts with a problem 1 will the student turn the card over and record the NEW form number and record answers. Remember, each student will have a separate practice card and test card (kept in the AM folder), and a separate exercise card (kept in the homework folder or with Mr. Bates). Only when both sides of the card are filled and the next assignment starts with number 1 will the student recycle the old card and receive a new card and a ticket.

Grades

I will take grade from quizzes (exercises). I will also take the student's top two overall grades for practice, tests, exercises, and review. For example in a grading period: if a student has a 98 practice average, 88 test average, 93 exercise average, and a 100 review average; I will put 98 and 100 in the grade book to be averaged with the other math grades. After a student masters an objective, AM will put four review questions for that objective on practices throughout the year. This is where the review grade comes in.

TOPS Reports

The TOPS report will tell the student how many questions answered correctly and give an number grade. The report also gives information for the 9-week grading period (bottom left) and the school year (bottom right). It will tell the student: objectives mastered, total testable objectives, and average grades for practices, tests, and exercises. If a student wants to know how many objectives he has mastered or if she is ready for a test, the bottom left of the TOPS report will inform them.
